Some is free, some is not.  If you are a hardy soul and can abide by rules, the outdoor rink in Rotary Park on Albert Street is now open 8:00am to 9:00pm (unless it’s not because of weather or maintenance) but there are a lot of rules.  No hockey sticks or pucks; no smoking or alcohol; must wear skates; be reasonably quiet; no pets and no unsupervised kids.  Probably reasonable.  Scheduled closing is mid March.  If you like it a bit warmer, you can get free skating at the Community Centre as well as their regular “Public Skating” for a fee.   The Town is advertising their Mayor’s Skate on Tuesday December 30th but there are also other times sponsored by other organizations.

Outdoor-Rink-Dec-08Outdoor Rink December 2008All free skates are called Sponsored Skates – presumably the named organization is paying for the ice.

Of course at the Mayor’s Skate you can also meet the Mayor and members of Council but then you can also see them (without skates) at the Mayor’s Levee on New Year’s day at 2:00pm in Victoria Hall.  The Mayor’s Skate is also labelled a “party” although the only hint of that is that they are accepting donations to the food bank and the Cougars will be “making a special appearance”.  So far, no talk of hot chocolate.

But here is a list of all Sponsored Skates this year.
