In April, the Town of Cobourg announced its participation in Communities in Bloom. The program promotes friendly competition between Canadian communities to beautify civic spaces in nine categories as listed below. In addition to the provincial program, the Committee announced that it would be hosting a Garden Competition as a local initiative. Eligible contestants, including homeowners, schools and businesses, were invited to enter the contest and judging took place in late June. The winners are listed below.

Garden Competition Winners

TaylorCategory: Rare, Unique or Significant (plants, trees, shrubs)
Winner: Dianne Taylor


NabieszkoCategory: Floral Display Garden
Winner: Christine Nabieszko
Dairy DreamCategory: Small Space - Merchant
Winner: Dairy Dream, King St.

Each of the winning gardens demonstrated originality in design and appearance and presented a good selection of healthy plants. In addition to a lawn placard proclaiming the BEST Garden Award, each of the winners received a gift certificate from Home Hardware.

Cobourg's Communities in Bloom Committee will be showcasing the Town of Cobourg when the volunteer judges visit from July 25th to 27th to evaluate each community based on the following key criteria:

  • Tidiness
  • Environmental action
  • Heritage conservation
  • Urban forestry
  • Landscape
  • Floral displays
  • Community involvement
  • Youth involvement
  • Community of gardeners

The judges will be given a 2 day tour of the Town and will be shown highlights such as Victoria Park, Victoria Hall, Heritage features, community gardens and more.
