Well actually, the designer of the site won the award for their work on the Town’s web site.  It’s a Hermes award at the gold level.  Organized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals based in Dallas, there were about 6000 entries this year with about 1000 platinum winners and 1500 gold winners.  ESolutions won a gold for the Cobourg site based on “creativity and what you apparently had to work with”.  There is no listing of other criteria used and no mention of functionality – it’s a marketing award.

Web site PresentationBut Town staff were pleased and presented the award to Council on Monday (see photo - Ashley Purdy at right).  Esolutions says that they have received 55 marketing & technology awards in the past 12 months.  They certainly know how to market themselves.

To enter the worldwide competition, marketing companies pay an $85 fee and describe what they achieved.  Go to their award notification here.

Entries come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, PR firms, graphic design shops, production companies, web and digital creators and freelancers.

Judges are senior-level, experienced professionals residing in the Dallas or Washington D.C. areas. They are free-lancers or own their own businesses. They are selected based on experience and availability.

Hermes web site says:

Utilizing a consensus judging system, the judges verbalize their criticisms, compliments etc. and then agree on a score. Entries receiving scores between 90-100 points are Platinum Winners. Entries with 80-89 points are Gold Winners. Entries scoring from 70-79 receive Honorable Mention recognition.

Although the site is certainly more attractive than previously and includes a useful search function, not all users are happy.  One example is Lydia Smith, President of the Cobourg Taxpayers Association.  In a letter to Council dated May 29, 2017, Lydia included as an example of Cobourg Council “needing to get back to basics” – item 5:  The Town’s website is still not fully functional and easy to use.

I wonder whether there will be any additional work to see how users like the site and if they have any suggestions for improvements.
